The New York State city of Saratoga Springs, with a population of 27,000, lies in Saratoga County and is the home of Saratoga Raceway. It is a 4 furlong harness track, with 168 metre home straight, which has offered a programme of harness racing for 78 years. In the early days it had an open air grandstand and floodlights, always catering for evening harness races, but by 1965 the facilities were upgraded to include an enclosed grandstand and clubhouse with combined capacity to seat 3,700. The inaugural meeting was staged on 26th June 1941 and continues to race all year round, although the principal race is the Joe Gerrity Memorial.
